As I said above I mostly listen to a type of music called rebetika. It can also be spelt rembetika, rebetiko and rembetiko. Favourite singers/musicians include Markos Vamvakaris (my ultimate favourite), Stratos Pagioumtzis, Vassilis Tsitsanis, Iordanis Tsomidis (best bouzouki player in the world though came later), Rosa Eskenazi, Rita Abatzi, Sotiria Bellou etc. Basically, it's the music of the streets, with a subcultre, slang and style of dress. It's golden age was the 1930's and 1940's. After that, it turned into a more pop-sounding thing, the bouzouki took on an extra set of strings and rebetika became known as laika. I know it's a simplified explanation, but I can go on for hours about this stuff. I own a trixordo (six string) bouzouki and am self-taught. Tips on the dromoi (scales) would be appreciated.
